Learn To Play Star Wars: X-Wing

By Guest Contributor: Cassandra Rosas

This strategy game is made for 2 - 8 players, and it involves intergalactic ship battles.

Choose Your Faction

The first thing you need to do is to choose a faction and buy some ships:

  • First Order

  • Galactic Empire

  • Galactic Republic

  • Rebellion

  • Resistance

  • Scum and Villainy

  • Separatist Alliance

After choosing which team you want to play, you have to buy one or two ships to start. There are starter packs and some expansions with more than one ship, and it could be a good first purchase to begin playing. We don’t use a board; you only need a table and a friend with some ships.

Each ship has some upgrade cards so you can add some abilities, more defense or attack.

Once you have the basics, each player has to customize their ships, each ship has some upgrade cards so you can add some abilities, more defense or attack, there is a very helpful app where you can customize your ships, which tells you the cards you can use and their value.

Set-Up

To start the game, you need to put your ships at the edge of the table. We will call this the setup phase; in some games, you can add some obstacles to the board, and some upgrade cards may be used at the setup phase.

After the setup, you need to choose a maneuver which is how the ship is going to move; each ship has a maneuver dial because each ship is different. And this would be the planning phase.

Activate!

Then comes the activation phase where each player is going to move their ships and choose an action; there are different actions like focus, target lock or maneuver, etc. Each action has a different effect and may help you in combat. To help you move, the game has some rulers that help you give the ship the trajectory that your maneuver dial shows, and with them, you are going to fly all around the board trying not to flee out of the edge; if that happens, your ship explodes.

Once you throw the dice, you just need to compare results to tell who wins the combat.

Attack!

So, after everyone has activated their ships, the fun starts because you may attack your opponents. This game has a big ruler which will tell you what range you are from the opponent, there are 3 ranges 1, 2, and 3. Your pilot card will tell you at what range you will need to be so you can perform an attack, also, if you are attacking and you are at range 0-1 of the opponent, you can add 1 attack die to your throw. If you are at range 3, the defender can add 1 defense die to their throw; each pilot card says how many dice you can use to attack and defend. Once you throw the dice, you just need to compare results to tell who wins the combat.

Once everyone finishes their attacks, you have to clean all the green tokens that weren’t used, and after that, you may start the next planning phase.

And this is how you play X-Wing, it will become more fun and more interesting once you know how to customize your ships, play them together, buy your favorite ship and pilot, and the more players it becomes more fun, also you can make teams and create a big intergalactic battle.
